Nia Brown Belt Teacher
Chester Grant, Nova Scotia, Canada

I came to the Nia White Belt in 2010 looking for a retreat and some exposure to movement and wellness.  I received an immediate gift of deep body learning.  I knew that I wanted to explore dance and movement both as a healing modality and for my own wellness as a new counsellor at that time.  Nia has been a constant for me, challenging my understanding of what it means to be truly well in the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual realms.  The deeper I go, the more layers I find and the more grateful I am for the amazing work done in the last 30 years by Nia's founders and generations of trainers, teachers and dancers.

I have had the pleasure of doing my White Belt - twice! - with Roberta Mohler, in 2010 and 2013.  In 2012 I experienced the brilliant guidance of Helen Terry for my Blue Belt.  In June 2013 I enjoyed the space and company at Nia HQ in Portland for the 52 Moves training with Debbie Rosas and Kevin Vereecke.  In December 2014 I completed the Brown Belt intensive with Ann Christiansen, a gifted trainer and inspiring Nia practitioner. I learn daily about applying the principles on the dance floor and in my life.  In March of 2016, I took part in the Moving to Heal training, and now I look forward to extending my offerings to more therapeutic applications.  I have a deep passion for supporting the healing of young adults living with cancer, and a firm belief that movement (of the body, mind, emotions and spirit) is healing for everybody. Most recently, in April 2018, I did my Green Belt with Loretta Milo and Martha Randall.  The evolution of Green means that I got to be steeped in the exploration of somatic leadership in terms of how I learn and embody Nia routines, how I facilitate Nia, and how I dance through life.  This practice is very rich indeed.

Above all, though, I continue to learn on a regular basis from the lovely folks that come to Nia classes on the south shore of Nova Scotia, and from my growing family of Nia teachers in our beautiful province.  There is always more to learn, and I look forward to the growth of Nia in Nova Scotia.
