BREATH INSIDE THE BREATH: Inspiration

Saturday, February 21 • 9:00 am-5:00 pm

This Mythic Body workshop is inspired by the 15th century Indian poet, Kabir who said, “Student, tell me, what is God?  He is the breath inside the breath.”  We’ll use simple movement and breath exercises, music and poetry to explore the fundamental yet extraordinary act of breathing from scientific, somatic and spiritual perspectives.  You’ll learn about the ecology of breath and atmosphere, as well as healing techniques for body, mind and spirit.

CHALICE OF THE PELVIS: Center
Sunday, February 22 • 9:00 am-5:00 pm

Centering is the most powerful stand we can take in our bodies and in our lives - for ourselves, each other and for the Earth.  This Mythic Body workshop draws its inspiration from meditation and martial arts, and its strength from the law of gravity, which asks everything in the Universe to relate center-to-center.  We’ll use simple movement exercises, music and poetry to explore the body center, hara, pelvis and sacrum as they relate to the center of the World and the center of our lives.

Price of workshop includes Nia class.

CONTINUING ED CREDIT for Healthcare Providers - LMTs, PTs, DCs, OTs.  (Other practitioners please inquire.)

Breath Inside the Breath - 7.5 Contact Hours.  This is whole-brain, functional approach to studying functional and applied anatomy, physiology and kinesiology of the respiratory system and its effects on the nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, digestive and integumentary systems, as well as functional motor recruitment, core stabilization, neuroplasticity, fluid pressure dynamics, stress and pain reduction, and psychological wellbeing.

Through didactic, functional and applied anatomy, sensory awareness and functional movement sessions, participants will empirically explore innovative tools for working with a wide range of chronic and acute orthopedic, neurologic and medical cases.  The curriculum draws on the work of Shirley Sahrman, PT, Donna Farhi, OT, Frank Lowen, LMT, and others.

Chalice of the Pelvis - 7.5 Contact Hours.  This is a whole-brain, functional approach to studying functional and applied anatomy, physiology, neurology and kinesiology of the pelvis for core strength and rehabilitation of the pelvic floor, pelvic organ prolapse, hip and sacroiliac joints and lumbosacral junction, as they relate movement systems above and below in the kinetic chain.  The curriculum draws on the work of Shirley Sahrmann, PT, Janet Hulme, PT, Frank Lowen, LMT, Christine Kent, RN, and others.

Notes About This Event

The human body is a Jacob’s Ladder between Earth and heaven.  Inspired by the World Tree or axis mundi in all traditions, this Mythic Body workshop guides participants to apply scientific, somatic and spiritual inquiry to aspects of human anatomy, such as bones, blood, nervous system, in order to understand and experience them as fractals of the Earth and of the cosmos at large.  Participants use movement to experience the ecology of vertical and horizontal systems in the body designed to integrate heaven and Earth, embodying the alchemical dictum, “As above, so below” as a methodology for connecting to Allness.

The workshop is for people of all ages and physical conditions.  No previous science or movement background is needed.  Participants will learn cognitive and somatic tools for creating their own personal, practical, holistic, body-based cosmology.

About Nia

What is Nia?

Nia is a sensory-based movement practice that draws from martial arts, dance arts and healing arts. It empowers people of all shapes and sizes by connecting the body, mind, emotions and spirit. Classes are taken barefoot to soul-stirring music in more than 45 countries. Trainings are designed for those seeking personal enrichment and professional development. Every experience can be adapted to individual needs and abilities. Step into your own joyful journey with Nia, and positively shape the way you feel, look, think and live.

How does Nia work?

Nia draws from Tai Chi, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, jazz dance, modern dance, Duncan dance, yoga, Alexander Technique and Teachings of Moshe Feldenkrais. Every class offers a unique combination of 52 moves that correspond with the main areas of the body: the base, the core and the upper extremities. Stiff beginners and highly fit athletes alike can adapt Nia to meet their needs by choosing from three intensity levels. Consecutive trainings collectively explore 52 principles for personal enrichment and professional development. Read testimonials from people of all ages, backgrounds and locations.

Why was Nia created?

Nia’s purpose is to grow a worldwide community of healthy people who are empowered to do great things. We believe every person can discover, explore, unleash and enhance their individual potential to live a fulfilling and meaningful life – by engaging their senses and listening to their bodies. With the right tools and education, we can increase our confidence and happiness. We can become connected to others to shape a consciousness that extends beyond our own. Together we will unearth possibilities never before imagined.
