I danced throughout my pregnancy twice a week with Charisse Shepherd in Durban, South Africa. I had a very healthy pregnancy without excessive weight gain. My muscles did ache afterward with any exercise I did (Nia or not); the fact that muscles change during pregnancy is a well-kept secret! But the benefits very much outweighed the aches.
I have a bad back and this really didn't trouble me during my pregnancy, due to Nia I'm sure! I would recommend Nia for anyone who is pregnant. I pretty much did everything in class, although I was careful not to kick too high and I would not have done star jumps had we had them. I did not do abdominal stretches due to the potential for diverticulation, but I substituted other stretches (weaving was always good!). I am afraid I ignored the guidelines for doing only 30 minutes of exercise and did the whole class instead, up until about the last month of my pregnancy when I would sit out a song in the middle of the class. I only stopped Nia about a week before my due date.

Why do you practice and/or teach Nia?
Nia is very good for me, as I am naturally quite uncoordinated and it helps me to find balance between my body and my mind without making me feel like I have to be a star dancer.

Nia is addictive, but you'll never regret it!
