About me:

I don't know if I ever would have found Nia had I not met my husband. I'd been living and working in Puerto Vallarta Mexico for six years when we met, and we had a whirlwind romance that ended with us getting married after only ten days of knowing each other. My husband is Canadian, like me, so it was only natural that I move back to my homeland with him. Within a week of being married, I became pregnant. Now, four years later, we have two beautiful daughters and live in a wonderful community called Nanaimo. 

The past four years were just amazing, but I needed to find something for me to do other than being a mother. A friend and I were looking for fun dance class and ended up trying a pole dancing class, which definitely hit the mark on being fun, but was not really what I was looking for. It was my mother-in-law who mentioned Nia to me for the first time. She had just started taking a class and said it was amazing and that I had to try it. Of course, I Googled Nia first and found the NiaNow website. Within minutes, I knew that Nia was what I wanted to do with my life. I wanted to teach Nia. I figured the first step would be to take a class, and by the second class I was totally in love.

Fortunately for me there was a Nia White Belt Training in Victoria with Martha Randall being offered about 5 months after I took my first class. My mother-in-law was my biggest supporter, and even encouraged me to learn a routine before going. I memorized Opal from the workout DVD. I also read the The Nia Technique book. I felt so prepared going into my White Belt, and the training was everything I had hoped for – and more. I was in love with Nia before my White Belt and now I am totally obsessed with the practice.

Nia is the best thing to happen to me since meeting my husband and having children. I couldn't have dreamed up a better life. This truly is a practice that brings balance to mind, body, emotions and spirit. Thank you, Nia. 

Why do you practice and/or teach Nia?

I practice and teach Nia because I truly believe it brings balance to mind, body, emotions and spirit. I need it in my life and have gained so much from it in such a short period of time.

I teach so I can share the practice with others. I have tried almost every class or activity out there – from rock climbing to figure skating – and I never felt passionate about any of them. Nia has grabbed hold of me like nothing else. It has transformed my mind and changed my physical body as well. Since I started doing Nia regularly, I have lost nearly 20 pounds and have a body I am truly happy with.

The best part about all of this is it is so much fun! I really felt like a child again when I took my first class. I have tapped into my spirit again, and life is so much more enjoyable in every way.

Where and with whom do you take Nia classes and/or trainings?

I was taking classes with Ann Marie Lisch in Courtenay when I was trying to get in as many classes as possible before my White Belt Training. I still take classes with her when possible, as I absolutely adore her, but I will mostly be focusing on my own personal practice here in Nanaimo now. 

I took my White Belt Training in Victoria at Sleeping Dog Farm with Martha Randall. That was truly a life-altering experience. I enjoyed every moment of it. Martha is such an amazing instructor. 

What is one thing most people don't know about Nia?

Most people don't have any idea what Nia is at all. I am so excited to have been introduced to this amazing life practice so I can share it with as many people as possible. The one thing that really has stuck with me is how much Nia has become a part of my everyday life. Just simple movements are more pleasurable now. I have become more aware of my body. 

What tip can you give someone who is considering trying Nia for the first time?

Have fun! Give your brain a rest and let your body lead the way.
