About me:

I'm 40, living on the prairies in southern Alberta and sharing my life with my husband, son, four dogs, three cats, four sheep, donkey, and lots of free-range chickens. I have a very happy and simple life, and am so grateful for it, even more so now I have Nia in my life too!

Why do you practice and/or teach Nia?

It fills me with so much love and happiness, and puts me in touch with my soul. It makes me aware of myself, both mentally and physically. The music is fabulous and fun to dance to. Nia is a great workout. It's AMAZING and the best thing EVER, and the anticipation of a Nia experience is nearly as good as the class itself! Never before have I cried tears of joy.

Where and with whom do you take Nia classes and/or trainings?

I go to Nia classes in Claresholm, southern Alberta. Our teacher is the amazing and beautiful Lise Schulze, who fills the room with such fun, energy and love! She is truly an inspiration, and has changed my life over the last ten months since I've been taking Nia classes with her. She has created our own Nia family here in Claresholm, and it's the best place to be whether you're feeling happy or sad - she'll hit the spot just where it's personally needed!

What is one thing most people don't know about Nia?

How it is individual to each person. You can move as much or as little as you feel comfortable doing. For me, it is also very spiritual.

What tip can you give someone who is considering trying Nia for the first time?

Don't worry about anybody watching you, because they're truly not! Let go of yourself and indulge your spirit and soul, listen to the music – and enjoy!

How does someone know if Nia is for them?

Give it a go and find out! But try it a few times before you decide either way. For me, it was in my fourth Nia class that I was hit with unstoppable tears and the realisation of how much my soul needed Nia. Playing at the time was Free (featuring Shannon Day), and the words made me realise how much my body was enjoying it, and how yes, I did want to be free, and how I was beginning to feel that way a little bit already by coming to a Nia class. Thank you to Debbie and Carlos, for the beautiful creation of Nia.
