Nia Testimonial: Lise Schulze, Nia Teacher
It was about this time 7 years ago that I first stepped into a Nia class. One dance was all it took. One dance completely and irrevocably changed my life.Truthfully? The 3rd song in was it for me.
I could feel something awaken, something that had long ago been surrendered to conformity and compliance. I left the class riding bliss, which I had experienced to a much lesser degree through drugs and alcohol, and neither could compare to the floating freedom that had been stirred by Nia.
One class and 6 weeks later, I was in Prince George taking my White Belt. Yeah, love makes me do crazy things. And I was in love, with feeling like me or perhaps feeling the stirrings of that the beginning of a deep love affair with me was about to begin. Fast forward to 2012. Now I have Blue, Brown, and Black Belts hanging in my closet. The belts are lovely, the trainings life expanding and totally life altering which led me all the way to...me. Me. Finding me. And, with that, allowing myself to meet the most amazing souls I never even knew walked this blessed planet.
Why do you practice and/or teach Nia?
Why? This is why. One of my favorite memories in teaching Nia is meeting Cathy. When she first came to my class in Coaldale, SA, I sensed a quiet reservation and hesistancy. A bit of a shell to crack. (I do enjoy the challenge of cracking a dancer's exterior, watching the fissure of light be released. And, yes, we are ALL dancers.)
Skip ahead a couple years and Cathy became a pioneer of Nia in Cochrane (another small city in Alberta). Why this story of Cathy? Well, to be honest, few inspire me the way Cathy does. I call her My Lovely Goddess of Grace. Once I had the pleasure of experiencing her light, I was never to be the same again. Ooozing grace, life as art, and easy sensuality are some of my favorite qualities of Cathy.
My knowings of Cathy are only in the cocoon of love that Nia so easily creates. My Goddess Cathy has been a warrior of Grace and Beauty bringing said qualities into every Nia class she has taught or partaken in. Even after having had her upteenth surgery, this time to remove a growth next to her voice box, she brought 9 Nia instructors together in Sacred Sisterhood.
We were treated like Goddess, showered with the sacred energy of femininity and wisdom. Cathy was teaching classes last week with barely a voice to be heard and still the determination to teach what makes her feel alive. Why do I practice Nia? Where else am I going to meet such amazing human BEings?
Where and with whom do you take Nia classes and/or trainings?
I am blessed with my own space, Studio Om Lila, in Claresholm, AB. I also travel to Lethbridge, Pincher Creek, and Okotoks to spread this intoxicating and life altering practice. Why? Because I love to feel alive and Nia is the best drug I have ever had.
What is one thing most people don't know about Nia?
That JOY, our birthright, is so easily accesible in class.
What tip can you give someone who is considering trying Nia for the first time?
Let it go, whatever is holding you back, let it go.
