Nia Testimonial: Clara, Nia Student
I am currently battling cancer. Luckily, I've had an amazing response to my treatments and am returning to Rome. I cannot speak highly enough of my Nia experience. My instructor, Valerie Beller, puts her heart and soul into each class. She has an amazing way of "feeling" what the class needs. In fact, I always leave Nia feeling as though I've had a spiritually uplifting, refreshing dance experience. I also have a lot of fun. It doesn't matter which type of emotion I have when I enter class, I always leave feeling happy. The fact that Valerie creates a sense of community in her class makes it even more inviting. In fact, we continue to share life outside of class. I think that it's wonderful to have a teacher that breathes life and energy and spirit into each class. I truly believe that Nia has been instrumental in helping me achieve my "amazing response" to this otherwise debilitating illness. For this, I'm extremely grateful.
Why do you practice and/or teach Nia?
I practice Nia because I love to dance and I find it is a wonderful way to get in shape. It doesn't even feel like exercise, because you get caught up in the spirit of it and your energy levels just keep getting higher and higher. Soon, you find that you are capable of doing things you never thought possible. Nia improves everything from flexibility to agility to balance... it just continues to amaze me that Nia is so "all inclusive."
Where and with whom do you take Nia classes and/or trainings?
I practice Nia at The Leaning Tower YMCA with Valerie Beller.
What is one thing most people don't know about Nia?
In addition to being a fantastic dance fitness class, it's also a spiritual and community building experience.
What tip can you give someone who is considering trying Nia for the first time?
Let yourself go and ENJOY it!
