Niagra Advance - Dance to end Violence Against Women
By Penny Coles | Niagra Advance :: January, 2013
"And even if you don’t think it’s not for you, supporting an end to violence against women, in this day and age when it’s difficult to comprehend what some societies continue to sanction, should appeal to all of us."
Local Niagra area media reports that Nia, a local dance and fitness group, is opening its community centre class on Valentine’s Day to those who want to join in this [One Billion Rising] movement.
If you’ve watched Nia, you will understand why it is an appropriate expression of support for women.
It is sensory-based, and draws from martial arts, dance arts and healing arts. It’s not about wildly jumping around to burn the most amount of calories in the least amount of time, but rather it is slow, graceful movements that connect the body, mind, emotions and spirit—it certainly has a spiritual element, both in movement and music.
While dancing may not be for everyone, this is a type of dance that anyone can do.
