Nia First Degree Black Belt Teacher
Los Angeles, California, United States

I am a 2nd Degree Black Belt practicing in Los Angeles. When I found Nia in 2010, I'd been an amateur dancer and mover my entire adult life. I'd done step aerobics, ballroom, ballet, jazz, modern, folk and more. I'd danced on stage at fairs and festivals and performed and directed costumed musical numbers at wacky theme parties. I'd been exposed to a wide variety of mind-body modalities, including T'ai Chi, Yoga, Alexander Technique, Franklin Method, Aikido, Pilates, Gyrotonic and more.

I thought I'd done just about everything - until I discovered Nia.

Nia's focus on sensation blew my mind, healed my soul and changed my life. After five years as a student, I took the White Belt in 2015 and have been teaching ever since. Prior to the pandemic, I taught three classes a week in three different neighborhoods of Los Angeles. Now I teach four classes a week on Zoom. I love online teaching!

I am also a producer, bringing in trainers and Nia luminaries from far and wide to deliver trainings, workshops and master classes. I produced a White Belt in 2017 and a Green Belt in 2018. My producing is on hold until the pandemic is over, but I've been enjoying mentoring new teachers online and developing my own workshops which will be offered on Zoom. I have a workshop on barring, and another on Nia and plantar fasciitis.

In my other career, I am a national thought leader on the rather niche subject of non-academic careers for people with PhDs. From 1991 to 2000, I taught English Composition at the college level while earning my PhD in Rhetoric and Composition. In 1999, while I was dissertating, I decided to pursue a non-academic career, and founded the first ever online community for humanities PhDs interested in non-academic careers. After graduating in 2000, I became a grant writer and Director fo Development for nonprofits, but kept managing the community I had founded. In 2010, I left fundraising in order to transform my community into a socially positive business called The Versatile PhD, which served 80 research universities and over 80,000 individual members (even more today).

I sold Versatile PhD in 2018 in order to spend more time on Nia, but still write and speak about PhD careers, by invitation. I am a popular presenter on the university circuit, and my most recent publication is the Afterword to a book entitled The New Normal: Navigating the Humanities PhD in the 21st Century (Rutgers U P, forthcoming in 2020). When the pandemic is over, I hope to share Nia with the academic world with my new workshop, "The Embodied Scholar: Mind-Body Integration for Academics."
