About Nia

What is Nia?

Nia is a sensory-based movement practice that draws from martial arts, dance arts and healing arts. It empowers people of all shapes and sizes by connecting the body, mind, emotions and spirit. Classes are taken barefoot to soul-stirring music in more than 45 countries. Trainings are designed for those seeking personal enrichment and professional development. Every experience can be adapted to individual needs and abilities. Step into your own joyful journey with Nia, and positively shape the way you feel, look, think and live.

How does Nia work?

Nia draws from Tai Chi, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, jazz dance, modern dance, Duncan dance, yoga, Alexander Technique and Teachings of Moshe Feldenkrais. Every class offers a unique combination of 52 moves that correspond with the main areas of the body: the base, the core and the upper extremities. Stiff beginners and highly fit athletes alike can adapt Nia to meet their needs by choosing from three intensity levels. Consecutive trainings collectively explore 52 principles for personal enrichment and professional development. Read testimonials from people of all ages, backgrounds and locations.

Why was Nia created?

Nia’s purpose is to grow a worldwide community of healthy people who are empowered to do great things. We believe every person can discover, explore, unleash and enhance their individual potential to live a fulfilling and meaningful life – by engaging their senses and listening to their bodies. With the right tools and education, we can increase our confidence and happiness. We can become connected to others to shape a consciousness that extends beyond our own. Together we will unearth possibilities never before imagined.

Notes About This Class

THIS CLASS IS STARTING ON WEDNESDAY 25th November 2015.  Planning is currently in progress for the first class, which may take a pre-booked workshop format.  The following weeks will contain lots of Nia orientation before/after the class - so arrive for 1pm is you can!

See www.stepinwithsusan.wix.com for details on workshop/first class pre-booking and last minute details,  and the yoga studio website for directions.

Nia comes to Perth!   This is the first Nia class in Perth (Scotland! -- sadly our Australian counterpart is ahead of us!) and I am so priviledged and excited to be building a brand new Nia community in this beautiful location.

The class duration is listed as 1pm-2.30pm as that is the length of time the room is available for us to use as a class.  However the Nia class portion will be the usual 1 hour.  Music will start no later than 1.20pm, please arrive prompty as door entry must be opened and students can sadly not be admitted after 1.15.  Come for Nia hints and general orientation - don't stress - aim for 1'oclock!

Perth Yoga studio is an beautiful Victorian building on the edge of town.  The nearest parking is just across the wide road on a parking meter adjoining the park. Enter the building and press the door entry button and the teacher will admit you.  Once class commences door entry is not possible, so please be on time. Students may arrive from 1pm and no later than 1.15.

The studio is a beautiful upstairs room with hugh bay windows and an amazing Victorian ceiling. Adjoining the practice space is a relaxing seating area where the class may enjoy some community time and we may discuss all-things-Nia and beyond!  Herbal teas etc are available.

This truely is a lovely space and makes not just for a chance to relax and re-engergise your body but to form new friendships and build with me a brand new Nia community in Perth.

Notes About This Class

CLASS WILL NOT RUN LATE JULY OR AUGUST WILL RESUME SEPTEMBER

Lunchtime Nia with Susan - this is a shorter class of 50 mins  to allow students to fit it into a 1 hour lunchbreak, this class is especially suitable for beginners to Nia and has an extra emphasis on mindful movement.

Please arrive as soon after 1pm as you can, especially if you are new.  The actual class starts at 1.10 and will finishe around 2pm, however there is an opportunity for a little wind down and chat afterwards until around 2.20, so please factor some extra time into your parking ticket!

The class will leave you feeling energised, yet relaxed - ready for whatever the afternoon may bring.

Nia has been described as "sneaky fitness". Just about every part of your body will get a kind-to-the-body workout, almost without you realising it. Move to inspiring music from around the world at a level that suits Your Body. Nia is non-competetive and it's fun! You don't need special clothes or any special equipment - you don't even need shoes! Just wear something comfortable that allows you to move and bring some water. Why not join us? What have you got to lose?

This is what people are saying about Nia classes:

"I love Nia because it's so uplifting. After the class I always feel mantally and physically energised."

"I'm so un-coodinated. I've never been able to dance or do sports, but I LOVE Nia!"

"I was very stiff and conscious of protecting my back and hip after an accident. I am so pleased that I can now attempt the more energetic moves and each week my aches and pains have disappeared. I can climb stairs and nearly reach my toes with ease. A bonus is losing a few pounds. I really feel good about myself."

Visiting the Yoga tree is a treat in itself - an oasis of peace and light - you will find it hidden away above the shops of the old-fashioned arcade in the heart of Stirling town centre.

There is a little lounge area in the studio where students may consume a quick snack, if they have brought one, after the class or there cafes close to the studio.  The entrance to the Stirling Arcade may be found just opposite Argos in the main shopping area.  The Yoga tree entrance is on a corner, about half way through the arcade, near to the restaurant tables.
