About the Nia White Belt
The Nia White Belt Training is the first level of a five-belt training series that presents a body-centered approach to health, wellness and fitness. If you have a desire to share Nia in a professional capacity, the White Belt Training is your entryway into teaching. Those who choose to pursue the path of personal enrichment use this training as a starting point for becoming a master student.
Over the course of one week, you will comprehensively explore physical sensation through five core-competency areas of study including movement, music, anatomy, science and philosophy. This joyful journey into the self is instrumental in helping you develop body knowing by learning to listen, interpret and consciously respond to the information your body communicates to you via sensation. Enroll in an upcoming training today, and positively shape the way you feel, look, think and live.
Upon graduation, you are eligible to become a livelihood member. As a livelihood member, you obtain a teaching license (whether you decide to use it or not) and have exclusive access to an in-depth continuing education program, an online forum, and special benefits and privileges. You may enroll in the Green Belt Training - which is dedicated to the craft of teaching - at any time after completing your White Belt Training. You may also enroll in the next level of training, Blue Belt Training.
Meet the Trainers
Maria Skinner is a Black Belt and Green Belt Certified Nia Instructor and proprietress of Yoga & Nia For Life in West Concord, MA. She has been practicing and teaching in the Boston Area since 1997 and is devoted to the practice of embodying the Body's Way and sharing the Nia Technique. Prior to embarking on the path of Nia, Maria practiced contact improvisation and danced Samba, Afro-Caribbean and African Dance. Before that, she danced the night away in New York City and San Francsico, perfecting the form of dance as ecstatic celebration. For her, Nia has become a way to blend the joyful party with deep awareness. Her classes provide the Nia promises of great cardiovascular conditioning as well as deep healing.
I have been dancing for as long as I have been upright. I hold a Nia Black Belt and the MFA in Creative Writing and I have taught Nia since 2001. Finding Nia was the key to reclaiming the Joy of living in my body. As a dancer and a writer, I find my purpose in self-expression and in helping others find the tools to express themselves, so that we may all expand into our wholeness. I teach Nia, yoga and writing with an emphasis on heralding a movement-lifestyle within academic communities. My current schedule includes teaching Nia for Lesley University and MIT.
