About the Nia White Belt
The Nia White Belt Training is the first level of a five-belt training series that presents a body-centered approach to health, wellness and fitness. If you have a desire to share Nia in a professional capacity, the White Belt Training is your entryway into teaching. Those who choose to pursue the path of personal enrichment use this training as a starting point for becoming a master student.
Over the course of one week, you will comprehensively explore physical sensation through five core-competency areas of study including movement, music, anatomy, science and philosophy. This joyful journey into the self is instrumental in helping you develop body knowing by learning to listen, interpret and consciously respond to the information your body communicates to you via sensation. Enroll in an upcoming training today, and positively shape the way you feel, look, think and live.
Upon graduation, you are eligible to become a livelihood member. As a livelihood member, you obtain a teaching license (whether you decide to use it or not) and have exclusive access to an in-depth continuing education program, an online forum, and special benefits and privileges. You may enroll in the Green Belt Training - which is dedicated to the craft of teaching - at any time after completing your White Belt Training. You may also enroll in the next level of training, Blue Belt Training.
Meet the Trainer
Martha is a Nia Black Belt teacher and on the International Nia Training Faculty presenting Nia Education intensives across Canada. She runs classes and workshops in Toronto and mentors Nia teachers worldwide. She brings 35 years experience and practice as a professional dancer and body/mind/spirit specialist, helping people take delight in their bodies and their dance.
Martha began her Nia career in 1996. One class was all it took to create a resounding ‘Yes!’ in her body/mind/spirit connection and start her on her way to complete the Nia ‘rainbow’ curriculum. She became a White Belt trainer in 2002 and Green Belt trainer in 2009.
Formal dance training began at York University where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance (1979). Throughout her movement career Martha has played and studied in an eclectic range of movement modalities including: modern dance, ballet, contact improvisation, Gabrielle Roth's 5 Sacred Rhythms, tai chi and karate, yoga and clowning. Her current explorations include Pilates and Butoh dance workshops.
Martha has been a dance artist with Claudia Moore's Moonhorse Dance Theatre and choreography by Sylvie Bouchard for the series “Older & Reckless”. She often collaborates with musician and sound therapist Gary Diggins who offers live music with his group Triund to her classes. She has offered body awareness classes to educators through the Toronto Board of Education and has taught an expressive arts movement course at the Haliburton School of the Arts in Canada. She has also volunteered Nia classes at Gilda's Club, a support centre for women affected by cancer in Toronto.
Her compassionate and intuitive teaching style is informed by her passion for physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual vibrancy in every day life.
