12 Ways to Love Your Body this Valentine's Day

The most important relationship you will ever have is the one you have with your body.

Valentine's Day is traditionally a commercial celebration of romance and romantic love with another person, but here at Nia, we see it as a time to celebrate and restore a loving relationship with the most precious thing you own, your body. It’s a time to be good to yourself and to cherish your body, for the magnificently intricate enterprise it is.

Here are a dozen ways to say “I Love You” and give the gift of health and wellbeing to your body this Valentine's Day.

1. Dance

When you dance you are facilitating a conversation between your body and soul. By developing a spiritual relationship with your body you are laying the groundwork for a holistic body transformation consisting of the mind, emotion, and spirit, that will last a lifetime—both on and off the dance floor. Dancing is a fun and loving way to be within your body that turns everyday acts into a graceful expression of joy. When you dance with the heart the body follows.

2. Listen

When you wake up in the morning breathe deeply, tune in to your body, and hear what it has to say. Feel and sense your physical body and discover what parts need healing. Become aware of the places within you that feel pain—the sore muscles, the twinging back. Become aware of the strong beat of your heart, the feel of air moving through your lungs. Do you feel healthy, unhealthy? Move and listen to the voices of your body and pay attention to details.

3. Acknowledge

Stop thinking you aren't in the body you are supposed to have. You are in the best body for you. Your body is your greatest teacher. Let your body be your teacher and guide you to more love.

4. Appreciate

Be your body’s friend and supporter, not its enemy. Turn your focus from appearance to gratitude for everything your body enables you to do. Create a list of all the things your body lets you do. Read it and add to it often. Say, “Thank you, body for everything you do and for being with me on this journey."

5. Rest

Hang out in bed and induce your body, mind, emotions, and spirit with breath, don’t jump out of bed. Take a few minutes to “smell the moment” inhaling, in and out through your nose, breathing in the universe’s light and love into the approximately 37.2 trillion cells of your body. Slow down and spend time relaxing with your body; allowing your body to heal, unwind and rejuvenate.

6. Indulge

Take your body and heart out to a special place you love, and get together with someone, with people you love, admire, and enjoy spending time with. Dress to feel beautiful, sensual, powerful and confident and step outside your box. Eat your favorite meal or go out to your favorite restaurant. Take yourself out on a date and end the day with a relaxing, warm bath, surrounded by candles.

7. Laugh

Choose universal life force joy as the fuel for living in your body and living your life. Smile if you feel like it. Better yet, laugh. Set the tone for your day. Find joy in your body, in your life and in your world and then spread that joy to the people around you. Connecting with your inner joy is a great way to tell your body you love it.

8. Praise

All day, walk with your head held high, supported by pride and confidence in yourself as a person. If you do things that make you proud of what you do, of who you are, and what you stand for, you will look good and feel good! Remember you are amazing and your body is an incredible vehicle. Honor it. Respect it. Fuel it.

9. Meditate

Meditation is a beautiful way to center yourself. Create a space for non-movement and stillness, where you are mindful and present to your body. Take a moment to stop all inner dialogue in your mind, to stop the attachment to the external world, to stop attachment to emotions, and to simply create the space to stop and wait for the sensation of relaxed and ready to arise so that you can move through life peacefully centered, and calm. Your body will reap the benefits from this type of serenity.

10. Exercise

Find a method of exercise that you enjoy and do it regularly. Don’t exercise to lose weight or to fight your body. Do it to make your body healthy and strong and because it makes you feel good. Exercise for the Three F’s: Fun, Fitness, and Friendship.

11. Radiate

Life is too short to waste time hating your body. Exude unconditional love for your body every day! The most powerful way to live in a body is to expect and choose love. It is by connecting to love and by directing our choices with love that we grow easily and effortlessly. Guided from an internal place, love becomes the only choice to make. The art of living is knowing how to love your body and life.

12. Repeat

Enjoy the miracle that is you and repeat these steps daily!

Have a happy and body-loving Valentine's Day! heart
