Nia Palooza

The 10th annual Nia Palooza celebration, held in London, Ontario was a great success this year, raising 100 bras for a local women’s shelter and drawing in a large crowd of participants. Nia Palooza is a weekend-long event packed full of movement and learning where you can explore your body and experience the bliss of celebrating your authentic self through the elements of the Nia Technique. This year special guest, Nia Black Belt & Trainer, Winalee Zeeb, was there to teach classes and moderate.

All proceeds raised during Nia Palooza are lovingly gifted back to both the Nia community and the community at large. In over 10 years of Nia Palooza, $15,000.00 has been donated to help support people in the Nia Community, through full Nia Scholarships and partial bursaries to help students and teachers both attain their White Belt or further their Nia education. Nia Palooza has also provided some financial support to a couple of individuals, within the Nia Community. One Nia Teacher is fighting an extreme medical issue and another Nia Teacher lost her home in a fire.

In addition, to giving back to the Nia community, Nia Palooza also supports organizations that are in alignment with Nia’s values and who do amazing work in the community.

This year the Nia Palooza team chose to support the following organizations:

1) London Intercity Community Health Centre. The Nia Palooza team purchases a large number of socks that are donated to "Socktober", a sock drive that helps keep the cities homeless a little warmer. Nia Palooza supports this sock drive every year.

2) Red Roof Retreat. An awesome organization run by Steffanie Bjorgan a Niagara Nia Student which provides quality respite and recreational programs for children, youth and young adults with special needs, and their families in the Niagara Region.

3) London Children's Hospital PICU. Nia Palooza provides baby sleepers for babies who require cancer and life-saving treatments.

4) Girls Empowerment Camp. A new venture for one of the Committee members and Brown Belt Nia Teacher Susan Meehan. She offers a week-long empowerment camp for girls aged 11-13. They learn about proper nutrition, meditation, Nia and many other awesome things over the week with Susan.

5) Nia Palooza will be purchasing pj's and a few other items at Christmas time to support their chosen women's shelter Atlohsa House.

6) This year the Nia Palooza committee and participants raised 100 bras for donation to Atlohsa house. ( A total of 350 bras has been donated over the last few years.)

The story behind the bra drive:
A number of years ago at a Nia Palooza Saturday night after party a particular red bra came out and made its way around the party, creating a lot of laughs. The next year the red bra appeared again and made it to some of the playshops. Every year the red bra appears at Nia Palooza, many people taking a turn wearing the red bra (over their clothes). The Nia Palooza team decided to put a fun twist on this for a good cause and dubbed their Saturday night party the “Red Bra After Party” and asked everyone to bring along a new bra to donate to one of the local women's shelters. Everyone has really got behind this fun yet important cause, providing "support" in more ways than one.

Over the 10 year run of Nia Palooza, the organizers and participants have supported a number of other charities such as Hospice, Brescia University Women's College Scholarship fund, mental health and a few different women's shelters to name a few. All while having a heap of fun dancing their hearts out and reconnecting year after year with so many amazing people, who have become dear friends and influential members of the community.

We at Nia Technique congratulate Nia Palooza for keeping Nia Magic alive!
