Notes About This Event

Join me for two hours- at 2:00, I'll be sharing the magic of Nia! The first hour will be discovering the nine movement art forms that go into this holistic dance practice. Then we'll dance the remarkable routine, Beautiful- a focus on compassionately conditioning the body, mind and spirit with positive affirmation music and gesture. Truly unique!! The song titles tell it all: "Staying in the YES!" "Living in the Flow~" "Bring it ON!" "Open to Receive." And so many more- it's a very unique piece of the Nia promise for a whole, living body workout- Mind~Body~Emotions~Spirit are nourished.

My wish? I hope (with every ounce of my being) that we inspire a member of the Central Illinois community to delve headfirst into Nia, attend a training and become an instructor, as there are no Nia instructors in the area since I left. This movement practice has been key in helping me keep my spirit energized, after the world turned upside down.

Come and discover the Joy in movement. using The Nia Technique, we will condition the body while exploring creative release.  Because each routine in Nia is choreographed, you have a change to fuse with the music like no other workout can offer.  Because each routine has a focused intention, you have the opportunity to work with your body in the way your body needs.

It's all about conditioning the SPINE in this month's workshop.  That beautiful piece of art which gives us so much freedom deserves its own day.  Join in, Monday January 20th 5:30-7:15, no matter your fitness level or age.  All will benefit because Through Movement We Find Health.

Let's Start October 9th!

While we're anxiously awaiting  the opening of the new studio on South Grand, I think we need to get moving NOW!  Springfield Dance is on International Parkway- take I-72 to the Curran exit or take Wabash all the way out, passing the AT&T building and going under the I-72 overpass. It's the very first right hand turn, and the first building on the right. For me, it's very quick to reach as I live in the country and take the interstate into town. Having s

For me, it's very quick to reach as I live in the country and take the interstate into town. Having something this close means I can get there faster than anything in the center of the city. 

So, let's get restarted, Wednesday night on October 9th, 7:10pm.  I picked this odd time because the studio IS PACKED at 7:00 with the children exiting their ballet classes.  This gives us a moment to let the chaos pass us by.

And don't forget- Moving Meditation in Washington Park begins the very next morning at 9:30!

Dancing Makes You Smarter. No, really! Read on.

The physical benefits of Nia seem obvious- increased cardio health, flexibility, mobility and more. (So much more!)  But a major study finds that dancing makes you smarter.  "Dancing increases cognitive acuity at all ages." And it does so where other physical activities fail! "...cognitive activities such as reading books, writing for pleasure, doing crossword puzzles, playing cards and playing musical instruments [were studied.

The physical benefits of Nia seem obvious- increased cardio health, flexibility, mobility and more. (So much more!)  But a major study finds that dancing makes you smarter.  "Dancing increases cognitive acuity at all ages." And it does so where other physical activities fail!

"...cognitive activities such as reading books, writing for pleasure, doing crossword puzzles, playing cards and playing musical instruments [were studied.] And they studied physical activities like playing tennis or golf, swimming, bicycling, dancing, walking for exercise and doing housework. 

One of the surprises of the study was that almost none of the physical activities appeared to offer any protection against dementia.  There can be cardiovascular benefits of course, but the focus of this study was the mind.

There was one important exceptionthe only physical activity to offer protection against dementia was frequent dancing. 
 

Reading - 35% reduced risk of dementia

Bicycling and swimming - 0%

Doing crossword puzzles at least four days a week - 47%

Playing golf - 0%

Dancing frequently - 76%.   That was the greatest risk reduction of any activity studied, cognitive or physical. 

So, what does dancing do that the other things don't?  It makes those beautiful, new neural pathways in the brain.  Ya gotta keep making them your whole life long.  And the brain won't make them if it's not needed.  Dancing requires split second decisions.  Left or right, forward or back, which way do I go?  

So DANCE for your Body, DANCE for your Mind, and read this great article from Standford.  It's easy to read and interesting to boot.  

And then come to Nia and dance your brains... IN!
