Join musician and dancer, Lis Addison, for an afternoon of chant combined with dance. Her signature practice, Kinetic Voice (KiVo) supports you in using your voice as a transformational tool, drawing upon yogic and Indigenous wisdom, as well as new research on the healing power of sound and embodiment.

In this 2-hour workshop you will learn to use your voice as a powerful vibrational force to move energy, and change patterns in a fun, playful and community building spirit.

This workshop is about expressing the Divine voice that manifests through each of us. KiVo is a ceremony in which we raise our voices TOGETHER to honor and celebrate life.  There is no judgement in the KiVo Circle. Everyone is encouraged to work together and contribute to the overall well-being of the community as we strengthen our indiviual voice and purpose.

KiVo is led in a call and response circle, yet time for individual improvisation and collaboration in the following structure:

1. Clear the Space:  Preparing for our time together.

2. Invocation:  Honoring earth, air, fire and water. We give thanks for that which sustains us.

3. Activation:  Chakra chants, body chants and specific movements and mudras.  We clear the physical and energy bodies in order to be more available to the Divine light.

4. Shaking Medicine and Improvisation:  Exploring natural biological pathways to the bliss state.

5. Community Creation:  Working together to create global family chants and rhythmic patterns.

6. Intention Circle:  Voicing our intention for a better world, a better life.

Notes About This Event

World music composer, Lis Addison, from San Francisco presents two events in Ashland on her west coast “Zadaka” CD release tour: a “Nia Source Master Class” on November 8 and a “KiVo Sound Healing Workshop” on November 9.

Nia black belt and physical therapist Rachael R. Resch presents a “Nia Source Master Class” accompanied by live singing with composer Lis Addison on Friday, November, 8 from 5:30 to 6:30 pm, at The DanceSpace, 280 E Hersey, #10, in Ashland.

Q&A with Addison to follow.  Please arrive 15 minutes early to register.  All levels of movement experience and abilities are welcome.

Addison is the composer and vocalist of the music for the Nia Routine “Source.”  The “Nia Source Master Class” will use music from Addison’s new album, “Zadaka,” but Addison will sing live to the recorded tracks.  "Zadaka" means "offering" in Swahili.

We'll move and groove to voices of men, women and children from the Kamba people in Kenya, Morogoro people in Tanzania, and sounds inspired by India and Standing Rock.

“We are blessed to have Lis singing for us in person for this event,” says Resch.  “It’s a rare and fun chance to do Nia with live music and get to know the person behind the music.”

The Nia Technique® is an integrative movement practice based on the joy of movement and developed in 1983 by Debbie Rosas and Carlos Rosas.  Nia blends nine movement forms from dance, martial arts and healing arts to provide holistic fitness and self-healing for body and soul.

Notes About This Event

APRIL 23 to JUNE 8:
Tuesdays:  9:30-10:45 am
Wednesdays: 5:30-6:30 pm
Thursdays:  9:30-10:45 am
Saturdays:  9:30-10:45 am

The Spring is the time of year for sprouting upwards - as new seedlings or as old growth continuing our journey anew.  The Hebraic mystical tradition understands that the human body herself, the human body himself, is the Tree of Life - the one who is rooted in both Heaven and Earth simultaneously.  "Omer" refers to the fruits on the Tree of Life - us, our bodies, our lives, the food we eat, and all beings.

Join us for seven weeks of Nia classes exploring how each part of the Tree of Life is nested within the body, and the body is nested within the Tree of Life.  Each day's focus is a jewel ("sephirah" in Hebrew) on the multidimesional Tree of Life that experssesitself through the four-dimensional human body.

For example, we'll explore Strength of Lovingkindess (Gevurah Sheb'Chesed), Beauty within Strength (Tiferet Sheb'Gevurah), Queenship of the Heart (Malkhut Sheb'Tiferet), Center of All Centers (Yod Sheb'Yod), and more.

Learn how your personal anatomy is a bridge to Earth's lunar calendar and to the sacred anatomy of the Universe.  Experience the indwelling spirit of the body.  Have fun your body's way.

About Nia

What is Nia?

Nia is a sensory-based movement practice that draws from martial arts, dance arts and healing arts. It empowers people of all shapes and sizes by connecting the body, mind, emotions and spirit. Classes are taken barefoot to soul-stirring music in more than 45 countries. Trainings are designed for those seeking personal enrichment and professional development. Every experience can be adapted to individual needs and abilities. Step into your own joyful journey with Nia, and positively shape the way you feel, look, think and live.

How does Nia work?

Nia draws from Tai Chi, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, jazz dance, modern dance, Duncan dance, yoga, Alexander Technique and Teachings of Moshe Feldenkrais. Every class offers a unique combination of 52 moves that correspond with the main areas of the body: the base, the core and the upper extremities. Stiff beginners and highly fit athletes alike can adapt Nia to meet their needs by choosing from three intensity levels. Consecutive trainings collectively explore 52 principles for personal enrichment and professional development. Read testimonials from people of all ages, backgrounds and locations.

Why was Nia created?

Nia’s purpose is to grow a worldwide community of healthy people who are empowered to do great things. We believe every person can discover, explore, unleash and enhance their individual potential to live a fulfilling and meaningful life – by engaging their senses and listening to their bodies. With the right tools and education, we can increase our confidence and happiness. We can become connected to others to shape a consciousness that extends beyond our own. Together we will unearth possibilities never before imagined.

RED BROCADE
by Naomi Shihab Nye

The Arabs used to say,
When a stranger appears at your door,
feed him for three days
before asking who he is,
where he’s come from,
where he’s headed.
That way, he’ll have strength
enough to answer.

Or, by then you’ll be
such good friends
you don’t care.

Let’s go back to that.
Rice? Pine nuts?
Here, take the red brocade pillow.
My child will serve water
to your horse.

No, I was not busy when you came!
I was not preparing to be busy.
That’s the armor everyone put on
to pretend they had a purpose
in the world.

I refuse to be claimed.
Your plate is waiting.
We will snip fresh mint
into your tea.
