TED – The Joy of Movement - Nia

I introduce myself and make a short statement; There is "The Joy of Cooking", there is "The Joy of Sex", and now we have "The Joy of Movement". Choosing joy, comfort and safety in all movements, Nia can positively shape the way you feel, look, think and live.
The lights go down and a quick video clip flashes onto the big screen:
Jane Fonda doing Aerobics; a “feel the burn” moment. Followed by a quick video clip of Debbie Rosas doing Nia; a “feel the pleasure” moment. I pause for the “wow” moment as the audience is both laughing and sighing at this visual show of contrast, change and evolution.

We have just visually witnessed the revolutionary changes that have happened from the 1980’s into this new millennium. (From the Nia Now National Website) “There has been a widely accepted health mantra of, “no pain, no gain.” Debbie Rosas and Carlos AyaRosas had questioned the source of their pain and rejected that notion. They defined a new approach to wellness – one that broke away from high-impact aerobics, repetitive movement and mind-body separation. They were guided by an idea that fitness could feel better, be fun and cater to the whole person. They knew deep down that there had to be a better way – a more fulfilling way: one that would efficiently sculpt the body while conditioning the heart and enriching the mind and soul.
What is the impact of love, pleasure, conscious awareness and efficient movement upon the conditioning of the body? What if movement and exercise felt good and was connected to Joy?
Through a simple formula of Science (mind), Craft (body), Art (Spirit), Debbie Rosas and Carlos AyaRosas spent 13 years co-creating Nia. This ultimately formed the category known as mind-body fitness today.
MIND (Science): Nia is exhilarating, not guilt-driven. Joy is a personal choice in each moment that can result in pleasure. With awareness and conscious intent, we can enhance the amount of Joy we experience through movement.
BODY (Craft): Rather than obsessing over physical results, Nia addresses the needs of the body, mind, spirit and emotions. Healing, not exhausting. The Joy of Movement asks us to seek the sensation of Joy in each and every moment. Nia offers a unique combination of 52 moves that correspond with the main areas of the body: the base, the core and the upper extremities. Stiff beginners and highly fit athletes alike can adapt Nia to meet their needs by choosing from three intensity levels.
SPIRIT (Art): Expressive instead of one-dimensional. Nia draws personal expression, conscious awareness and artistry from disciplines of the martial arts, dance arts and healing arts. Nia encourages people to experience many movement variations, and to explore their individuality. FreeDance (free form) movements allow personal choices and personal connections to self.
Nia inspires people to choose Joy, to love their body and their life, a revolutionary idea worth spreading. These choices catalyze change in their body, their lives, their futures and ultimately their world!
