Nia Black Belt Teacher
Bastrop, Texas, United States

I discovered Nia in the late 1980's at a fitness club in Austin, Tx.  Through a plate glass window, I saw women dancing, all ages and sizes. When I saw these women dancing- I thought "I want to do THAT!". I took the 8am Nia class at Premier Lady Fitness for a few years, on and off, when I could find the time.

By 2006, I'd retired from teaching high school biology and moved to the small town of Bastrop, 25 miles east of Austin.  I found Julie Wylie's Nia class at a Hyatt Resort close by and danced with Julie on Sunday mornings for a few years.  In 2008 I asked her what I could do to deepen my Nia practice, and she suggested the White Belt Intensive.  I signed up for (and completed) the White Belt Training with Holly Nastasi at Synergy Studio in San Antonio in October 2008, intrigued, yet scared to death of even the thought of becoming a Nia teacher.

I set dance aside for a few years as I focused on ailing parents and family responsibilities.  In 2014, after my parents had passed, I suddenly had a mighty urge to TEACH Nia.  With my friend Julie's help, I learned White Belt Dreamwalker, immersed myself in the Nia White Belt Principles, and found classes to teach at the YMCA.

In 2015, I traveled to Pittsboro, NC to take the Green Belt Training with Stephanie Abalon.  In 2016, I opened Studio Espavo, a Nia,Yoga and Healing Arts Studio in a beautiful old warehouse building on Main Street in Bastrop (One giant leap!)

In 2016 I completed Nia Blue Belt at the beautiful Soma Ranch with the beautiful Helen Terry.  In 2017, I finally traveled to The Mothership to take the Brown Belt with Debbie Rosas.  In 2018, I returned to Portland to take the Black Belt Training.   Along the way I have completed trainings in Moving to Heal and Nia FreeDance.

Nia has profoundly changed my life. I have found a self-discipline I never knew I had- discipline born of desire, not fear.   I have lost 40 pounds since I began teaching classes weekly, I have found and strengthened my voice, my power and my purpose. I have found the friendship and support of Nians all over the world. I have learned so much from Debbie and the Trainers, and Carlos (through the Nia Routine DVDs).

Nia is brilliant.  I hope to share this craft, this workout, this practice, this lifestyle as long as I am able to.
