I experienced NIA for the first time when I was living in Sydney from a lady (Sunday Ross) my ex-wife and I had met by chance. Sunday was an interesting mix - a bodyguard, body builder and a NIA dance instructor. Although I enjoyed the experience of that one class, it wasn't until November 2012 when I was looking for a creative release from the pain of separating from a 20year relationship that I discovered NIA once more.
It took me a while to find a form of dance that would allow me free expression as well as a means to explore movement - I tried Jazz dance but it became boring very quickly since much of the time we were simply learning choreography which was limited for the guys in the class. I then took it upon myself to re-discover NIA and find a class. My initial contact was through Taryn Pallister who informed that there was to be a Dance Jam in Byron Bay. Having no idea what to expect I turned up in jeans, shoes and a white shirt - taking off my shoes as I approached the hall and noticed everyone dressed casually and in bare feet.
I enjoyed the experience so much; it was like opening up to enjoyment once more. NIA has allowed me to experience the freedom of being in my body rather than being locked within my mind. It has provided me an opportunity to express myself my way. It has re-ignited passion and a heartfelt connection to movement, music and participants of the classes. It has provided me good friends and the satisfaction of being in a community of likeminded people. Thank you to the fantastic beautiful NIA instructors that have been provided me these gifts.
