My Nia journey began with modern dance—doing it and writing about it as a dance journalist. I've also been an ardent practitioner of yoga. In Nia, I've found both the fluidity and expressiveness of dance and the deep somatic awareness and alignment of yoga ... plus the warrior energy of martial arts!

I have also found healing. I got into Nia in my late 50s because of two health issues: Arthritis in my shoulders made it uncomfortable to do my previous fitness activities, swimming and yoga; and a diagnosis of osteopenia in my hips (along with a family history of osteoporosis) made me want to do more weight-bearing exercise. I did a Nia White Belt at 58, thinking I might be in good enough shape to teach for a year or two. Six years down the road, I've consistently taught two classes a week. Although Nia can involve big shoulder movements, the choreography is so smartly designed that I have no shoulder pain. And, without my needing to take medication, my bone density has remained stable in the 10+ years since my first DEXA-scan. I did a Blue Belt at age 60 and a Brown Belt last month. To celebrate my 65th birthday in January 2015, we did a Nia jam.

What I hope to share with my students is my passion for Nia as a body-mind-spirit practice. I love to sweat so hard in class that my hair is drenched. Nia also feeds my soul. I resonate deeply with music, and I'm always looking for songs that inspire me. Some of my favorite Nia experiences have been creating routines for Valentine's Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Independence Day.

I'm very fortunate that my day job also lets me tap into the creative source. I am the author of The Tin Horse, a novel about two sisters, published by Random House in 2013. I'm working on a new novel. And I write dance and book reviews for a number of online sites.
