Nia Black Belt Teacher
Durham, North Carolina, United States

My Nia journey began in 1998 when my mother brought me to my first class at Studio 206 in Charlottesville, VA, so I have her to thank -- for so much -- but specifically for exposing me to the Nia Techinique! At that time, I wasn't ready to recognize the sensations in my body. In fact, I got as far OUT of my body as I will ever go before reconnecting to myself through Nia years later, after college.

I began my dedicated Nia practice in 2007 in the Triangle area of North Carolina. I received my White Belt in June 2008 from Stephaney Robinson in Charleston, SC, due to the encouragement of my mentor/teacher/niamama Kate Finlayson and accompanied by my niamiga Amanda Kaufman. In April 2010, I deepened my relationship with Nia and completed the Blue Belt in Portland with Carlos and Debbie - my first time at Studio Nia! After three years of building teaching experience, I dedicated myself to the practice of teaching and received my Green Belt in July 2011 from my peach juice WB trainer, Stephaney, in the town of Pittsboro, NC at the beautiful Joy of Movement studio. A year later, in July 2012, I returned to Studio Nia and was transformed by my Brown Belt experience with Debbie and Ann Christiansen. With Debbie and Ann as my guides, I became a Black Belt in August/September 2013.

Through Nia, I have gained a deep awareness of my body. Guided by sensation, I'm able to stay focused and avoid injury during physically demanding activities in new environments (such as climbing an icy volcano!). In class, I practice expressing feelings that once made me uncomfortable, which helps me feel emotionally balanced in every day life. Instead of allowing my perspective to be influenced by everything I think, now I play with my mental realm and thank it for the way it does its best to support me. Nia has nourished a sense of gratitude and aliveness in my spirit, enriching the connection I feel between myself and the community, nature, and the cosmos.

I am grateful for the support of Triangle Nia, the community of Nia instructors to which I belong in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area ("the Triangle") of North Carolina. Find classes in our area here:

"Many of us say we want to make a difference, but I think we forget that in order to make a difference, we may have to do something different. It’s easy to go along with the status quo, but the question we have to ask ourselves is it what we really want at the cost of our own values?" ~ Colleen Patrick-Goudreau, Vegan Author and Speaker
