Nia Blue Belt Teacher

Nia is a fitness practice unlike any other. We dance, we kick, block and punch, we play with emotions and silliness, we relax, breathe and treat our bodies with love and care as we condition them at the same time. The 9 movement forms of Nia combine dance, like Jazz and Modern; martial arts, like Taekwon Do and Aikido; and healing practices, like Yoga and Feldenkrais Method in an hour of movement, expression and whole body conditioning. Practicing Nia builds new neural pathways in the brain, lessens anxiety and depression and boosts your feelings of wellness and joy. Nia is a movement practice for everyBODY! Your joints will love the fact that is low impact, your heart will love that it gets it pumping, and your spirit will love the freedom to be YOU, to play and move your body, YOUR way. We practice the principles of Nia in class and take those principles into our lives to empower ourselves to live to our greatest potential, enjoying life to the fullest and living consciously in our bodies.

Finding Nia in 2003 changed my life and I discovered dancing and moving my body again. I was hooked from my first class and the more I learned and practiced the more I changed in how I viewed myself and my body. I trained in 2012 to become a Nia teacher and now have also completed my Blue Belt Training. I invite you to try a Nia class with me! In fact, try 3-5 classes and let the easy-to-follow movements become a part of you. Through movement we find health!

Nia is my passion and my full-time profession. I teach 8-10 classes a week at several locations in Minneapolis, St. Paul and Minnetonka. I recently added a new event to my calendar called a Dance On! Nia Party. It's 90 minutes of dancing, movement, some guided by me, some free dance and it's a blast! I teach Nia workshops that combine movement with lecture/discussion on topics including movement and the brain, delving deeper into the 9 movement forms of Nia, creating courage in your life, and an introductory workshop on Nia and its 52 movements. I have taught Nia to students as young as 4 years old to adults, both women and men, of all ages. Private Nia instruction is also available.

Students of mine have written some of their own words about Nia and my classes:

I enjoy the freedom of Nia while being provided with a strong container. As someone who has done modern dance, yoga and Taekwondo in the past, Nia is an opportunity to integrate elements from disciplines I feel connected to while having fun and exploring my body and movement mindfully. I feel stronger, more flexible and joyous after a Nia class. My level of fitness is improving and it is easier for me to be motivated to attend a Nia class than to just go to the gym.

I love Beth's Nia classes and I would wholeheartedly recommend taking a class with Beth whenever you can! I enjoy her presence, mindfulness, joy and enthusiasm. It is infectious! She uses wonderful routines and gives a Nia class her own special flavor, including original choreography on occasion. Give yourself the gift of the joy of movement with one of Beth's Nia classes!  - Alex I.

Practicing Nia allows me to continue to teach ballet. The Nia class makes perfect sense to me, it moves smoothly and clearly from the start to the finish, using your entire body and allowing freedom and individuality.  – Marie H.

Nia has benefited me in many ways in my years of practicing it. I’ve develop strength, endurance, and expression. It helped let go of my inhibitions about being "clumsy" and instead find that I can be graceful. I relax and release tension in a Nia class and at the same time discover joy and physical expression through movement. It helps me to practice mindfulness, I’m “in” the moment when I take a Nia class.  –Teresa T.

An elegant dancer, Beth Giles creates community with just her smile and can kick out a pop song to drive the crowd wild. Beth's Nia class is accessible to all, join in today and see your joy quotient rise. – Amy A.

I felt so good after taking a Nia class from Beth! I felt like I could do anything!  -- Deb F.

Nia is a wonderful fitness fusion class that combines my 3 favorite arts: dance, martial & healing arts. Nia has been instrumental in helping me regain the joy of movement. The practice interchanges between yin & yang energy, helping me experience the grace & ease of dance & the power & precision of the martial arts. Beth Giles brings grace & ease to the Nia practice - she is conscientious of her students inviting them to work at their level. She is proficient in demonstrating the levles of intensity open to all students to ensure each one of her students is operating in a level that suits her/his body's way.  - Dawn B.
