I LOVE music and I LOVE moving to music, so not surprisingly I found Nia!
My journey as a Nia teacher began in Sheffield,UK. I have a background in meditation, and previously worked as a full time English teacher with 11 - 18 year olds. I began teaching Nia after my White Belt training in 2007, just once or twice a week, whilst still teaching English. But in 2008, a while after completing my Green Belt, my Nia journey took off when I met with David Fleming, then a new White Belt graduate. We decided to work together to promote Nia and we set up a social enterprise, the aim being to grow a Nia community and create a livelihood. In July 2009 we incorporated as a company limited by guarantee, and at the same time I left my English teaching career and became a full time Nia teacher based in Leeds. I have never looked back!
David and I spent the first year developing community networks and through a grant from Age UK, taught up to 12 classes a week with community groups throughout Leeds as well as developing private classes both in Leeds and Sheffield. From this point on we took all of our Nia trainings together:
Blue Belt training in 2010
Nia 5 Stages training 2010
Brown Belt training 2011
Black Belt training 2014
From 2009 to 2013 we continued to provide Nia classes to a wide range of community groups, (elderly, visually impaired, adults with learning disabilities, cancer patients) and more recently have begun to focus more on our private Nia classes as well as Aerial Yoga classes and Hanna Somatic workshops. Our aim is to run our own studio offering various movement classes, workshops and 1-2-1 treatments.
Through practising and teaching Nia, I am fitter, healthier, and happier now, than at any other point in my life - so far!. Not only that, but I have a fulfilling livelihood that I can share with such a broad range of people. I feel incredibly grateful to be able to say 'I love my job and I love my life'!
Please contact me if you would like more information about Nia with community groups, or if you would like to start having a Nia class in your area.
