About Nia

What is Nia?

Nia is a sensory-based movement practice that draws from martial arts, dance arts and healing arts. It empowers people of all shapes and sizes by connecting the body, mind, emotions and spirit. Classes are taken barefoot to soul-stirring music in more than 45 countries. Trainings are designed for those seeking personal enrichment and professional development. Every experience can be adapted to individual needs and abilities. Step into your own joyful journey with Nia, and positively shape the way you feel, look, think and live.

How does Nia work?

Nia draws from Tai Chi, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, jazz dance, modern dance, Duncan dance, yoga, Alexander Technique and Teachings of Moshe Feldenkrais. Every class offers a unique combination of 52 moves that correspond with the main areas of the body: the base, the core and the upper extremities. Stiff beginners and highly fit athletes alike can adapt Nia to meet their needs by choosing from three intensity levels. Consecutive trainings collectively explore 52 principles for personal enrichment and professional development. Read testimonials from people of all ages, backgrounds and locations.

Why was Nia created?

Nia’s purpose is to grow a worldwide community of healthy people who are empowered to do great things. We believe every person can discover, explore, unleash and enhance their individual potential to live a fulfilling and meaningful life – by engaging their senses and listening to their bodies. With the right tools and education, we can increase our confidence and happiness. We can become connected to others to shape a consciousness that extends beyond our own. Together we will unearth possibilities never before imagined.

Notes About This Class

Beginning 22/7/15 I will be offering a half hour class in the Nia 5 Stages at the Tugun Progress Hall before regular Nia.

Time: 8.30 – 9.00am, followed by Nia 9.00 – 10.00am.

Come along to enhance your somatic awareness and sensation of Pleasure of living in your body!

The Nia 5 Stages is an integrative practice based on the five stages of human development: Embryonic, Creeping, Crawling, Standing, and Walking. Each stage is a foundation for the next. Combined, all five stages help people to integrate physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. When practiced daily, these stages facilitate optimal alignment and function. Practicing the Nia 5 Stages allows your body to naturally reclaim the physical Mobility, Flexibility, Strength, Agility and Stability it needs. The continual practice of the Nia 5 Stages provides a way for the body to do what it does best, take care of itself and to self-heal. When allowed to, the body will always move towards healing, seeking how to function optimally.

It has been found that benefits can be experienced in as little as five minutes a day and that, no matter how many times practiced, profound changes occurred.

Testimonials from last year’s retreat:

“I attended a mini retreat with Ken Gilbert in 2015. I enjoyed Ken's unique style and was impressed with the depth, sensitivity, focus and creativity he displayed as a facilitator. I would definitely attend other events or trainings he runs.” Jodie Munn, Tamborine Mountain.

“I attended my first Nia retreat with Ken Gilbert in April 2015 & had an absolutely wonderful experience.

I learned so much, revelled in the joy of the movements & enjoyed Ken's teaching style all of which helped pave my path for the White Belt with Sophie in November.  Many thanks Ken & Lorraine.” x Patricia Shaw, Brisbane

“What can I say about my retreat experience…other than it is responsible for my undertaking white belt and now blue belt…had decided next BlueB Ken was undertaking, I would be there!

“Ken is an inspirational retreat leader. He embodies the full practice of Nia principles and techniques in his approach. Working with him gave me insight into the greater role Nia could play in my personal development - no longer just a joyful fitness activity but a way to really be in contact with myself and the wider community.” Lyn Symonds, South Coast
