About Nia

What is Nia?

Nia is a sensory-based movement practice that draws from martial arts, dance arts and healing arts. It empowers people of all shapes and sizes by connecting the body, mind, emotions and spirit. Classes are taken barefoot to soul-stirring music in more than 45 countries. Trainings are designed for those seeking personal enrichment and professional development. Every experience can be adapted to individual needs and abilities. Step into your own joyful journey with Nia, and positively shape the way you feel, look, think and live.

How does Nia work?

Nia draws from Tai Chi, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, jazz dance, modern dance, Duncan dance, yoga, Alexander Technique and Teachings of Moshe Feldenkrais. Every class offers a unique combination of 52 moves that correspond with the main areas of the body: the base, the core and the upper extremities. Stiff beginners and highly fit athletes alike can adapt Nia to meet their needs by choosing from three intensity levels. Consecutive trainings collectively explore 52 principles for personal enrichment and professional development. Read testimonials from people of all ages, backgrounds and locations.

Why was Nia created?

Nia’s purpose is to grow a worldwide community of healthy people who are empowered to do great things. We believe every person can discover, explore, unleash and enhance their individual potential to live a fulfilling and meaningful life – by engaging their senses and listening to their bodies. With the right tools and education, we can increase our confidence and happiness. We can become connected to others to shape a consciousness that extends beyond our own. Together we will unearth possibilities never before imagined.

Notes About This Class

If you've tried Nia before, you know this class with Stacey will be fun. And if you’ve never tried Nia before, but you enjoy moving to music, I promise you will sweat AND smile!

Each class starts with slow, Tai Chi and Modern dance inspired moves to ease our bodies into flexible movement. Next we add some fun, heart stirring Taekwondo-style kicks and blocks along with some Jazz box steps and cha-cha-cha’s to really move our energy. Finally we lengthen, stretch and learn about our body using moves and strategies from the healing arts: yoga, Feldenkrais and the Alexander technique. Bodies of all shapes and sizes are encouraged to come dance, and adults of all ages are welcome -we have students in every age of fabulousness from 30's well into their 70's!

Wear clothes that make you want to move and bring your dancing soul as we groove to the beautiful and eclectic sounds of Nia music. Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated and be prepared to dance in bare feet to work over 7000 nerve endings in your feet (of course, if you have previous foot injuries feel free to bring shoes you can move in). A yoga matt is also recommended but not always used (usually it is for the last few songs).

Please call or email me if you have any questions at all, or if you are thinking of trying your first class but you want to know that a familiar face will be there to greet you on your first day.  :o)

I look forward to experiencing the joy of movement with you!

With joy and gratitude,

DEATH.

For most of us, the word falls like a heavy weight, evoking variations on bleak, ugly, dark or terrifying. In our Western culture, at least, we collectively respond with a knee-jerk “Um .. not interested”. To me it is gravely (pardon the pun) sad that any of us might be living with such a perception of a grim shadow lurking on our periphery, like a terrorizing threat to the life-party we feel entitled to. Even more tragic is how our death-phobic culture denies us opportunities to witness, get involved in, and even celebrate death as the very real, rich happening that it is. Not only do we deprive ourselves the experience of connection to this great fabric of being human by this very common thing that binds us; we miss out on being able to rest into the reality of death’s organic place in our life cycle, and thus on being regularly awakened to the life that we’re meant to live out in the meantime. It’s exactly this gathering-together and awakening-to that I’ve felt called to create with this unique adventure. Part barefoot bliss, part deep dive, and part raucous celebration, ‘Dancing on our Graves’ offers you a gentle yet head-on look at what your dying means to you, and, in turn, what this means to the remainder of your living. My intention is for us to hold death – this inevitable “end of things” – long and steadily enough in our warm, curious gaze to feel into the preciousness of that which eventually “ends”. To free up some of the life force that we invest into keeping death at bay, and out of our awareness, and pour it back where it belongs – living life with immediacy, sharp awareness and wild gratitude. To experience our own impermanence lovingly mirroring back to us the delicious mystery and awe of being in a body for this short while – a body just waiting to be fully breathed, sweated and shouted in a brief blast of technicolour. And then, to return back home with our very personal death like a talisman in our pocket, quietly reminding us of what matters most.

THE PLACE:

I chose to gather us in Mexico, whose tropical heat, sensuous landscape and slow rhythm allow us to slow down, open up, and dial in to ourselves. I also chose this land for the people, who can show us how to “do death” differently, having long recognized death as a welcome presence in daily life and celebrating her with holiness and humour. I chose this time so that we arrive the night before Dìa de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), two days during which, I am told, a portal is open between our world and the spirit world. Our home for the week is Haramara, a magical haven that is, suitably, ‘to die for’. With gourmet meals, an infinity pool and a private beach, we will be well nourished, well inspired and well taken care of; you may never want to leave the property. Haramara (“Mother Sea”) is intimate and secluded, with gorgeous open-air cabañas scattered over 12 lush acres. Our dance and gathering place is equally breath-stopping, with handcrafted wood floors for our feet and a view of jungle and ocean for our eyes. Or other playground is Sayulita itself, a colourful bohemian town that generously welcomes us with heart, soul, and fish tacos, and with the waves of Playa de los Muertos (Beach of the Dead) awaitng our sweaty, well-danced bodies.

THE RETREAT:

Our days will include dance (Nia and freeform), music, meditation, ceremony, play, reflection, writing, drawing, and other spontaneous happenings - in group sessions (morning, afternoon and/or evening), as well as woven throughout our entire time together. We will participate in temazcal, a transformative sweat lodge ceremony. And, nestled within it all will be spacious time to snooze, write, swim, wander to town, get massaged, or do nothing at all.

PREVIOUS PARTICIPANTS SAY:

“I have done other kinds of retreats before but this one has made an indelible imprint on my heart and soul.” – C.W.

“This week changed me profoundly. I started to come to terms with death, and more importantly, fell in love with my life all over again! Thank you, brave and beautiful Judy, for creating this extraordinary experience!” - K.L.

“You are consummate in opening doors - creating mood, movements and visions to explore - even with a difficult topic like death.” – B.I.

"I came to explore Death, and left even more committed to exploring this Life.” – Y.S.

“I am blown away by the trust and generosity of spirit that evolved in our week together. And such a shift happened in my internal world view. The words ‘Thank You’ do not say enough to Judy, our Alchemist. Love, awe, and gratitude, perhaps!” - A.G.

“I speak in an ancient wisdom now. I will die with no regrets.” – L.U.

ABOUT JUDY:
I am a black belt Nia teacher, embodiment facilitator, and a lifelong student of how to be more truthfully human. I have practiced and performed in a wide range of movement forms for over 30 years, was born into and studied within the field of psychology, and for the past few years have been mesmerized with death’s life-changing teachings. I have led retreats in Sayulita for several years, weaving the land’s unique magic together with the collective wisdom of each group that joins me there. With integrity, intuition, and creative attention to detail, I hold a strong and gracious space - within which play, pleasure and delight are always our honoured guests.
